The largest global turnout to an Ecobulbs giveaway took place on Saturday in Turangi, with more bulbs still to be given away.

On Saturday, at the Turangi Senior Citizen Hall, five free Ecobulbs per household worth at least $100 was given away as part of a scheme from the King Country Electric Power Trust.

The bulbs last are up to 30 years and use up to 90 per cent less electricity that the inefficent bulbs they replace.

Turangi-based trustee Sandra Greenslade called the event a massive success. "It was fantastic, peop[le actually started arriving the night before," Ms Greenslade said. "We served over 2000 people, and Chris Mardon (Ecobulbs managing director) said it was a global record for a one day turnout.

"He has distributed 12 million bulbs across Australia and said he had never seen something like this before."

Ms Greenslade said there were still more bulbs to give away, and encouraged people to take advantage.

"The bulk of the ones I've got left are the bayonet type bulbs, because that is what of the ministry types of houses need."

All of the bulbs were paid for by the Kings Country Electric Power trust.

Ms Greenslade said the ultimate goal of the trust was to make sure all of the homes are being efficent with the power usage.

"The difference between an ordinary bulb and Ecobulb is huge, an ordinary bulb is 100 watts, but the Ecobulb is 7 watts, the savings would be a minimum of $100 a year."

She said that due to the success of the giveaway, the trust will now consider a similar event in the future.
